LOCAL government correspondent Mark Tallentire listed 162 council staff who earn more than £100,000 per annum (Echo, Apr 25).
If the wages of those 162 people were reduced by five per cent that would release £810,000 for the North-East and North Yorkshire. This, in turn, could create jobs for up to 81,000 people who could earn £10,000 per annum.
What would those jobs be?
Well for a start, companies like British Gas and Talk Talk that make profits out of people in the North-East should be made to have their call centres in the North-East not in the Far East.
Every company and organisation I know needs more personnel on business and help lines while some people in places like Fir Tree and Witton-Le- Wear, in County Durham, might like to see the odd bus now and then.
There’s plenty of jobs in both the public and private sector.
