I HAVE read with interest the HAS letters on Remploy (HAS, Apr 17) and, in particular, the information that Remploy was started in 1947 to provide work for service personnel disabled by war.

It is a fact that we have seen many service personnel who have been injured in conflicts since the end of the Second World War. We need Remploy now as much as ever. These citizens are proud to be employed and get out of bed to go to work. I’ll hazard a guess that none of them are over-paid or in receipt of huge bonuses.

When a country gets involved in conflict there is a price to pay.

We cannot ignore the debt we owe to our Armed Services. Nor is it up to us entirely how that debt is paid.

To merely hand out money is not enough. The injured want to feel needed and as near as possible like the rest of us.

There is a saying in retail outlets, “once it’s gone it’s gone”.

Once these placements close they are gone, their contacts snapped up by an entrepreneur, specially adapted equipment sold for scrap.

Would you kick a cripple? Well don’t let the Government do it in your name. Fight to retain Remploy, fight to improve Remploy, fight to protect those unable to defend themselves.

The able-bodied have a moral duty of care for those less fortunate than themselves and owe a huge debt to anyone injured in conflict.

Surely even in these times, our society can find a way of saving such a worthwhile organisation.
