DARLINGTON Conservative councillors have formally objected to the closure of the town’s Arts Centre and find the indecent haste to dispose of the building questionable.
Perhaps the Labour group is concerned that the Localism Act, due in April, will jeopardise its plans or, maybe, a deal has already been done in respect of the development of the buildings?
If the controlling group really supports the arts in Darlington, as it says it does, then itshould wait until a grant towards a replacement arts centre is clarified. This would pump prime a new arts centre which does not have to be a new building. Only then should Vane Terrace be closed and sold.
Councillor Charles Johnson, Darlington.
