Capello

ONCE again the nation’s football supporters get their misguided hopes up for a successful assault on the European Cup.

I regularly work on the after dinner circuit with ex-football stars, referees and managers.

They are agreed on the reason for our lack of success in major international tournaments. It is not rocket science that our failure lies in the number of foreign stars playing in our premiership.

If our home grown players are not getting top class regular matchplay they cannot be expected to perform at world level.

I also question the punishments given to high profile players caught using illegal substances, which seem very light compared to other sports such as athletics, boxing, cycling etc. where immediate bans from future competitions are automatic. It seems that football is bigger than the law.

Will Harry Redknapp get Fabio Capello’s old job? Perhaps Christopher Wardell will offer his services?

Will it make any difference. I think not.

Dave Adams, Darlington.
