Mrs Thatcher

AS someone who wrote in positive response to an earlier letter about Margaret Thatcher, I wish to reply to the letter from Bob Ratcliffe (HAS, Feb 5) in which he asserts she was no friend of the North-East.

On a simple level, many will remember her coming and supporting the development of the Mandale area of Stockton but on a much higher plain, she left office leaving a very strong economy which benefited us all.

Is it any wonder that her right hand man, Nigel Lawson, is now often to be seen on BBC’s Newsnight and The Daily Politics show, giving his advice on how to get out of the mess Tony Blair and Gordon Brown left us?

Perhaps Mr Ratcliffe might reflect and let us know what Tony Blair did for the North- East, despite his home and constituency being in County Durham.

Colin Hatton, Marton.

Margaret Thatcher was no friend of the North East. Or any other region or country of the UK. She made her decisions to benefit the entire United Kingdom. And she succeeded in doing so by rescueing us from the chaos left by Labour in 1979. Just like the Coalition had to do in 2010.
.
As for Blair and the half dozen other North East MPs in his Cabinet. They did precisely NOTHING for their constituents. Nothing.

Thatcher raised UK unemployment to 3 Million by ramping up interest rates in a futile attempt to control the money supply. Many companies fell by the way in the North East because of this. It was only when the policy was effectively ditched in the mid eighties that the UK economy began to recover. But the loss of manufacturing which she saw as inconsequential (preferring service sector industries) was never re instated. Just as she announced the spectre of inflation had been beaten the economy began to overheat and base rates were soon back up to double figures. So I don't view her through rose or blue tinted glasses.

What Labour MP from here in the north east has done anything for us - Stuart Bell has been here for 27 years and has achieved nothing for us other than Stuart Bell who managed to get himself the title of laziest MP in the country. The late Ashok Kumar campaigned here to have the post offices kept open but voted against it in Parliament. If they vanished from the face of the earth we would not lnow they had gone.
