Conspiracy theory

THE tragic loss of life in a football stadium in Port Said triggered protests on the streets of Egypt’s capital, Cairo (Echo, Feb 6).

In a country engulfed in uncertainty, in the West there is the perception of the Middle East as a region at war where tensions exist most of the time. It is complex and confusing territory.

For those wishing to build an identity and seeking direction from government it has been a difficult period. The Arab Spring brought hope, but the reality is something very different.

This is why the authorities in Egypt should have acted in preventing such a tragedy.

Speculation and conspiracy will be rife unless someone in the leadership makes a stand.

The demise of the Mubarak regime will count for nothing unless there is real change and Egyptians feel that they can trust their leaders and be freed from those years of corruption and oppression.
