Tax and spend

ERIC PICKLES’ comments on proposed changes to Council Tax should give many of us cause for concern.

He suggested that Labourcontrolled councils were actively considering the removal of the single occupancy discount which could, on average, result in £360 being added to their annual bills.

Eric Pickles described this as a “widows tax”. At a time of austerity, such an additional payment will be a significant problem for widows, widowers, many pensioners and single parents etc.

Perhaps many readers may wish to check where their own local councils stand on this issue.

After all, local elections aren’t that far away.
