Mr Goodwin

DURING the Arctic conditions the country is experiencing, I have some advice for the Labour Party and Ed Milliband. That advice is simple – do not skate on thin ice.

The Fred Goowin and bankers’ bonuses saga is beyond doubt a debacle. Such is to be expected when career politicians with little real life experience are in charge. Closer examination of the saga reveals the following: who recommended the knighthood in the first instance?

Answer: Labour.

Who negotiated the deal which gave Steven Hester and his cronies high bonuses? Answer: Labour.

Why then does Ed Miliband and his acolytes make condemnation when their decisions are part of the problem. Have they collective amnesia on this point?

Labour has a track record of rewarding failure – Ian Blair and John Prescott were both honoured despite their incompetence.

The sad thing about this affair is that the honours system has been shown in a light which does not reflect upon those who have been awarded gongs for real honourable deeds those who work tirelessly in the community providing a service or charitable efforts.

A system which bows to the public obssession with celebrity and knights a geriatric entertainer with little or no talent such as Bruce Forstyh needs an overhaul.

Colin Mortimer, Pity Me.

Another good letter from Colin. Sadly the Tories have been equally guilty of honouring tainted men. Both parties are to blame.

"A system which bows to the public obssession with celebrity and knights a geriatric entertainer with little or no talent such as Bruce Forstyh needs an overhaul", unlike you CM, he seems to be loved by millions of people who he has entertained for over 50 years and as for talent, he came up through the showbiz ladder unlike the manufactured "stars" we suffer today.

Ahmen to that Mr Lacey.

Unless you are rewarding a lollypop lady for 50 years dedicated service or someone who has served their community, over and above the call of duty, the whole honour system is corrupt. Just another part of our divisive class system.

I agree with Colin's letter but Sir Bruce is a very bad example to chose. Personally I would have referred to the number of times someone who has spent a lifetime using their time doing good for ohers receives an OBE, CBE or MBE whilst an over paid sporting celeb gets a knighthood for winning a test match or rugby game.

But the award you receive is based on the size of your wallet.

Not so CT. Heard of Sir Chris Hoy?

Hi Colin, No Tory crooks ?
You can be forgiven for forgetting Tory Lord Lambton and the prostitute scandal because he is dead. However Lord Taylor is very much alive and in prison for fraud. Surely you remember Mrs Thatchers dear friend the perjurer Jeffrey Archer? He was chairman of the Tory party, and talking of perjurers what about the Rt. (dis)honourable Jonthan Aitkin who served in Thatchers cabinet. He tried to persuade his 16yr old daughter to lie on oath to save his tory hide. Another dear friend of Maggie was the crook Neil Hamilton who liked nothing better than an envelope stuffed with twenty-pound notes.
With a bit of googling you can add a lot more Tory crooks to this list, and that's just the ones who got caught.

Your letters are always excellent Colin and make very good sense.
.
It's always nice to see them, to see them, nice.

Although I kind of agree with ATC and CTR on the Bruce Forsyth example. Norman Wisdom probably wasn't everyone's cup of tea either, but millions loved him (including me) so commenting on knighthoods for entertainers is always going to be debatable, if not controversial.
