THE television version of The Saint celebrates its 50th anniversary next year.

Of course, the TV series was based on books written by the author Leslie Charteris, first published in 1928.

The TV show starred Roger Moore as Simon Templar, after the role was turned down by Patrick McGoohan who would later star in The Prisoner.

The series had a long run from 1962 until 1969 and Roger Moore remains the actor most closely associated with the character.

Such was The Saint’s success that big stars queued up to appear including Peter Wyngarde, Honor Blackman, Veronica Carlson, Mike Pratt, Edward Woodward and Jennie Linden.

The series is almost as well known for the theme tune – composed by Edwin Astley – as it is for Roger Moore’s superb performance.

The Saint was a great role model – a hero who hated guns and violence. Almost 50 years later, wouldn’t it be great if the series were to return?
