I AM writing to thank everyone who supported the campaign to save the Zurbarans and Auckland Castle and who signed the petition which I presented to Parliament. Your voice was heard. The Zurbarans and Auckland Castle have been saved for the people of Bishop Auckland to enjoy forever.
In a campaign like this many people do many things and together they add up to something really powerful. It was right to fight for our heritage. And we achieved all our aims: we have the pictures, the castle with better public access and the bishop staying in our community.
This has given us a great opportunity to regenerate the centre of Bishop Auckland, which is a beautiful place that needs better looking after.
Together with Durham County Council and the National Trust I shall be working to make Bishop Auckland a great tourist attraction and over time this will bring new jobs which are much needed in our area.
I also want to thank The Northern Echo for the part it played in achieving this brilliant success for Bishop Auckland.
Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland.
