THANKS for your report (Echo, Oct 4) about the visit of BNP leader Nick Griffin to the region to support our part in the national campaign to bring our troops home from Afghanistan.

The new Government seems as willing as the last to spend the lives of our men and women on a war the public does not want.

It was good to see so many people shaking hands with Nick and wishing him well. Can’t imagine David Cameron, Ed Miliband or Nick Clegg getting the same reaction from ordinary folk on the streets of North-East towns.
