Islamic extremism

RALPH Musgrave (HAS, March 17) writes: “Any Martian arriving on planet Earth and looking at the UK would assume, rightly I think, that the Government’s big plan is to Islamise the UK.”

It seems Mr Musgrave understands no more about Britain’s political system than the average Martian. For what possible reason would the Government seek to “Islamise”

the UK?

The only way Britain could become an Islamic state is if we vote for it. That seems unlikely, as British Muslims constitute less than four per cent of the population, and most have no interest in creating an Islamic state. There are fringe groups which do have this aim. One is Hizb ut Tahrir, which is closely monitored by the authorities, but so far has remained within the law.

Another is a little gang of unemployed misfits from London called Islam4uk. Now banned, it has been repeatedly and unequivocally condemned by those who speak for the majority of Muslims.

There are also people who incite murder or racial hatred.

They should be dealt with severely, whether they are inspired by the neo-Nazi ideals of the far-right, or by the doctrines of “Islamist” extremism.

Pete Winstanley, Durham.
