I FEEL compelled to respond to your sensationalist report about Google Street View, in both the front page article concerning murdered Darlington student Ashleigh Hall, and in your Comment column, “A question of privacy” (Echo, March 17).

Google is operating completely within the law – taking photos from publicly-accessible places.

There is no right to personal privacy in a public space or within public view, and there should be no expectation of this “right” from anyone.

In the case of the naked child being captured by Google in a London park, I believe the child was not facing the camera, was a long distance away, and then only visible on the most extreme zoom setting. The quality level at the highest zoom level is so blurred that they wouldn’t be identifiable.

It makes common sense that if there’s something you don’t want the world to see, don’t do it in public.
