BA strike

THE response of David Cameron to the proposed strike of BA cabin crew demonstrates that he has not realised that the best a government can do in an industrial dispute is to act as honest broker.

When he asked the Prime Minister to back BA staff who cross picket lines this weekend he showed he was out of touch with working class communities where there is a feeling of betrayal when colleagues act against them.

To my mind, Gordon Brown handled the events at Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Question Time correctly.

If Mr Cameron really means it that with him as Prime Minister the Conservative Party would return to a “one nation” posture he would do well to learn from the answers Mr Brown gave to his questions.

Mr Cameron would be well advised to read what Benjamin Disraeli, the first Earl of Beaconsfield, wrote and model himself more on those ideas than those of the Conservative Iron Lady who brought about so much bitterness in the Eighties.

The Tories may frequently remind us that they cannot be trusted with a Commons majority, but are Labour any better? Is it any wonder 44% want a hung parliament?  Consequently, although electors must vote Tory in Scarborough to stop another Labour majority, they must also vote Labour further down the Tory target list in Stockton South to block a Tory one.
