Well done, Nissan

MAY I congratulate the management and teams of workers at Nissan, in Washington, Wearside, for securing the contract to make the new electric car, the Leaf, which – with the new battery plant already announced – will put the North-East at the forefront of electric car manufacturing in Europe.

This latest announcement underlines the skills, dedication and determination that all sections within the Nissan factory and its supply contractors have shown.

Even in times of global economic uncertainty the North-East work ethic of all pulling together and securing a better future has once again paid off. Well done, one and all.

Bob Price, Sunderland.

Well said Bob, Birmingham where we moved with my work, had 5 addresses up to the 80s and watched the demise of the once great car industry by Red Robbo and the like. The skills of a century in British Leyland gradually disappeared abroad. Thank goodness some were reborn up here.

Apart from the workers themselves, the Nissan factory has thousands and thousands of ancillary businesses depending on its continued existence. I am very pleased that such a large employer is investing in the region
