Sally Army salute

RE Ray Mallon’s column about the fine work of the Salvation Army (Echo, March 12).

Although I do not belong to the “Sally Army”, I have always held them in high regard.

In June 1944, when there was a lull in the front-line fighting, we were allowed to go back, in small groups, about 200 yards behind our lines to be given food and tea. Guess who would often be there alongside our cooks – the dear old Salvation Army mobile canteen, usually run by two middle-aged ladies.

Quite often, the German artillery would fire again, putting these brave women in very great danger. I have always admired them.

Bill Wood, Shadforth, Durham.
