Looking ahead

HAVING local people involved in important issues is part and parcel of local democracy. That’s why I think we should all have our say over the proposed Local Development Framework which Durham County Council is putting together and will determine how Durham City is developed over the coming years.

I was very pleased, therefore, to be able to meet and speak to council officials at a seminar last week organised by the city’s MP, Roberta Blackman-Woods, where we talked about these things in some detail.

The MP is experienced in dealing with planning issues so her views were really interesting to hear, too. She wants to make sure Durham is developed in a sensible and sensitive way, unlike in the past, and I am totally with her on that.

"She wants to make sure Durham is developed in a sensible and sensitive way" - The Millenium and Gala Theatre development, Milburngate, redevelopment of Leaves Bowl to create the monstrosity around the new High Street, ethnic cleansing of residential areas to create a student ghetto, etc, etc
Horses and stable doors spring to mind. Most of those examples by the way instigated by a Labour administration.

North Road - surely the ultimate disgusting gateway from a main line railway station into a heritage site.
