House of Lords

I SEE that the Government is going to make a proposal to Parliament before the General Election to replace the House of Lords with an elected chamber.

It is much overdue, but considering the way the Government has waited until the end of its time in power before seeking our verdict in the forthcoming General Election, I wonder if it is some sort of gimmick. I find it difficult to believe the Government really means to do it.

The Government has had much to say about unelected people, but it has not hesitated to appoint them when it suits. Will Lord Mandelson take it kindly if he has to stand before the electors to get into Parliament?

It reminds me of the song during the war: “Who do you think you’re kidding…”.

Geoffrey Bulmer, Billingham.

I can also remember New Labour saying it was going to hold a referendum on the EU Treaty, they must think that this latest false promise will rake in many votes from the gullible in this area.
