COLUMNIST Peter Mullen yet again warns us that we will “die of political correctness” if we ignore the threat from Muslim extremists (Echo, March 9).
Who’s ignoring it? He certainly isn’t, and neither are scores of other journalists who write hysterical articles in newspapers and make scary TV programmes.
The police and the security services aren’t ignoring it either.
Sensibly, they work to prevent terrorist attacks and prosecute those who transgress our laws regarding inciting murder or racial hatred.
Mr Mullen says that the aim of the Islamic Forum of Europe – “to change the very infrastructure of society, its institutions, its culture, its political order and its creed from ignorance to Islam” – amounts to a “manifesto for an Islamist revolution”.
That depends on whether they hope to achieve this aim through violence and subversion, or by persuasion and open democratic debate.
Devout Christians probably agree we should be governed according to Christian moral principles. Jesus instructed his followers to “teach all nations”.
Do we accuse Christians of trying to take over the world?
Fortunately, we live in a liberal, secular democracy, which does not allow dominance by any religious group. Most of us like it that way, and we’ll keep it that way.
Pete Winstanley, Durham.
