Afghanistan

HUGH Pender is right to strike a note of despair about our involvement in Afghanistan (HAS, March 13).

I am sure efforts are being made behind the scenes to end this conflict. It is not because the cost of the war is prohibitive.

Tragic as each loss of life is, the numbers involved are nowhere near the losses sustained in earlier wars. The point is that to have our service personnel bogged down in an endless war does not make much sense.

I note there is no shortage of recruits for service. The Armed Forces will always recruit spirited young men and women who, in accordance with their own lights, want to make a difference. With the unemployment brought about by the recession, and the boring work some have to do even in employment, there is likely to be a flow of volunteers.

While I hope I am proved wrong, I feel I might be moved to write letters such as this well into the future.

There has to be a political rather than a military solution, but human nature is such that to prevail against others seems to be a dominant characteristic.

Geoffrey Bulmer, Billingham.
