'The Great Game'

DURING the late 19th and early 20th Century “The Great Game”

was played out between the British and Russian empires for supremacy in Central Asia, especially Afghanistan.

It seems “The Great Game”

has now moved to within our own borders and is now played out between our political parties who, like the previously mentioned empires, make up their own rules as they go along to suit their totally enclosed, self-serving existence.

They choose their own playing field and rules and have scant regard for the spectators (commonly known as voters/taxpayers) standing shivering on the sidelines.

Fortunately, if you take the long view, all empires self-destruct and as the saying goes: “Give them enough rope and they will hang themselves.”

But do we have the time or rope?

M Hawkins, Langley Park, Durham.
