Policing

RE Councillor Nick Wallis’ comments urging residents to sign up for Neighbourhood Watch rather than pay for a private security firm to police their area (Echo, some editions, March 11).

The firm, Sparta Security, has expanded in Darlington because the police are not patrolling our streets on foot preventing crime and there is also a concern about police response times.

We are concerned about the development of private security firms in these areas of police work.

We have found that the reasons for this situation are that Durham Police has lost more officers, as a percentage of its total, than any other force in the country. Between March 2005 and September 2009 it slashed the number of officers by 193 – 11.1 per cent of its 2005 total (1,738 down to 1,545).

Liberal Democrat plans for the police would put 3,000 new police officers on the beat across the country, making funds immediately available by scrapping the ID cards scheme.

We fully support Neighbourhood Watch, but recognise it can only do so much in keeping an eye out for anything happening in the area and reporting it to the police.

Neighbourhood Watch is no substitute for what the police should be doing and that is having a visible presence on our streets.

Alan Macnab and Tom Hodgson, Liberal Democrat Focus Group, Haughton West Ward, Darlington.

And if the liberal types have there way they would de-criminalalise crime. So there would be no criminals, they don't want criminals in jail so what's the point of more police if criminals aren't going to be punished properly. The liberal types (who already responsible for weak sentencing) also want the age of criminal resposibility raised from 10 to 18 or over, Clegg today was saying there should be discussion over this so we know who's side he's on as usual not the victims. And if Mr Mcnab got out more and read a bit more etc, he would have noticed that the police have pledged to spend 80% of their time on the beat including in his ward. You don't see that in the self congratulating newsletters of some.

The liberals have made so little impression on me that I wouldn't know who klegg was if he knocked on my door and introduced himself. Total non-entity.
Apart from that, the letter panders to the misconception that bobbies on the beat are somehow better at fighting crime than coppers in cars. They are not - an officer on foot cannot cover an area properly and serves only as reassurance. A cheaper option would be to paint pictures of policemen on walls around the country, giving the impression of more officers - probably work just as well too! You can have that idea for free, liberals - that makes, err, ONE idea you now have!!! LOL!!!!
