Surgery blaze

I CONDEMN the actions of the two children involved in the blaze that destroyed the Adan House surgery in Spennymoor and it is clear that the father of one of the boys is sincere in his apology for his child’s actions (Echo, March 8).

We are told the children concerned clearly regret their actions. It seems to me the only way they can redeem themselves is to keep out of trouble, get an education and do something positive with their life which will make their family and town proud.

But in Spennymoor one of the commonest complaints is of the absence of play facilities for young children. While there are play facilities within the former council estates, private housing developers have for decades built those estates without play facilities for children.

Where play facilities do exist they are far too distant for young children to use. This not only leaves me wondering if this incident would have happened if these children had somewhere to play, but it also highlights the need for all housing developments to include facilities for the young and teenagers.

Same old excuse if there was somewhere to go this wouldn't happen. I suppose the youths who assaulted man in Helmington who challenged youths who stole wheelie bin, (incidentally the fire referred to in letter was started by wheelie bin being set on fire according to tv news) or those hounded to death or took their own lives. If those involved had somewhere to go it wouldn't have happened. If it was that simple wouldn't there be plenty of things to do or go to and no incidents such as these. I don't think so these things would still happen and many incidents do happen where there are plenty of places to go or do. The yobs still cause trouble outside because it's not long before they are barred and they get the place closed down because the decent don't want to be anywhere the yobs might be causing trouble outside or inside.

Such incidents do happen where there is plenty to do, but often peopel aren't aware they exist, it may not be what interests themm, they may cost money to use, have to be booked before hand and are only available for short periods of time each week.

My father has a friend who's grandchildren use a bus shelter as a goal post, because there's nowhere these children (aged 9 and 10) can go to play a stupid game of football.

Visit Spennymoor sometime and take a good look. During the Summer Children use the outdoor market to play football, hanging around street corners. Teenagers go to the daisy field to drink cheap cider, many of them have gotten into trouble because there's nothing for them to do or anywhere to go.

If children and teenagers have no where to go and nothing to do, then they'll find their own amusement which can mean going down a path leading to drink, drugs and crime.

There'll always be the yob element within all social classes, but it doesn't mean we should try to stop children turning into yobs. It takes a community to raise a child and how we do that creates the society we deserve.
