General election

10:14am Thursday 11th March 2010

I AM amazed that Frank Robson (HAS, March 2) is happy to contemplate another five years under a Labour government when Labour’s past 13 years have been a total disaster for Britain.

Mr Robson suggests a few possible Conservative cost-cutting scenarios, but fails to mention savings are needed to repay the huge debt incurred by his Labour colleagues.

If only that debt was Labour’s sole “achievement”, but after 13 years we are left with ruined pension schemes (Gordon Brown’s pension raid), gallant soldiers sent to war with poor equipment, empty gold coffers (Mr Brown’s gold sale), doubled council tax, increased unemployment/invalidity with hospitals and schools (built under never-never private finance initiative schemes) forced to sack teachers and nurses to cover loan repayments for next 30 years.

On January 10, 1979, James Callaghan uttered his famous remark: “I don’t think other people in the world would share the view that there is mounting chaos.” It was followed by the Sun headline the next day: “Crisis? What Crisis?”

Just as in 1979 the Labour government fails to comprehend the perils of the present situation. The only solution will be to vote for change in May – in Darlington that means a vote for Conservative candidate Edward Legard.

Jean Jones, Darlington.
