Pensions

I HAVE no wish to dampen the spirits of EV Hills (HAS, March 5), but my late brother, on reaching the age of 80 in 2007, said that if he saved his 25p pension increase for eight weeks he could then buy a pint at his local.

This year, it is my turn to become an octogenarian and the same pint in the sale local will now take 12 weeks of pension increase to buy – that is before the Budget – but only two weeks to buy a postage stamp.

My best wishes to EV Hills for 2018.

GW Middlemiss, Darlington.

Yet again a whinging OAP they should thank themselves lucky they have reached10 years over 3 score and 10. They can buy a lot of pints with the money they have saved with their free bus pass for all over England. The free tv licence for over 75 (in household) and £450 winter fuel allowance for over 80s. All these things conveniently forgotten and they didn't get these un means tested handouts in the years of 1979 to 1997. They probably wont get them again if there is a change of govt, who also want people to work till they drop ie abolisment of state pension.
