Politics turn-off

11:29am Tuesday 9th February 2010

I DESPAIR at the determination of Durham City’s Labour MP and Liberal Democrat politicians to score cheap political points in their increasingly desperate attempt to win votes which, in the process, is diminishing the reputation of Durham.

The latest public spat over ID cards versus local Passport Office jobs (Echo, Feb 5) was petty politics at its worst. Why can’t Labour and the Lib Dems understand that they are turning people off politics and doing nothing to promote the place we all care about? They should know better.

Well done to Nick Varley, Durham resident, local campaigner and the country’s youngest Conservative parliamentary candidate who has refused to join the cheap point-scoring of Labour and the Lib Dems.

The Conservatives claim it is time for change, but nowhere is that change needed more than here in the North-East. I hope positive politics will win through.

James Bell, Durham.
