Barnett formula

I READ your article about the Barnett Formula, “Brown ‘is afraid of Scottish backlash’”

(Echo, Feb 3), with interest.

Gordon Brown should remember that he is facing a General Election, possibly on May 6, which will give English people a chance of voting against his Labour Party on the grounds that Scotland already has its own government.

Why should we have a Scot as Prime Minister when he refuses to correct the injustice towards areas of the North-East, which loses billions due to the unfairness of this outdated formula?

In my opinion, this is the biggest single issue which affects all areas of our funding.

For Scotland to receive funding of 98 per cent and the North-East only 77 per cent of the national average is an anomaly that should be corrected immediately.

Councillor Ben Ord, Spennymoor/Middlestone Division, Durham County Council.

He is not frightened of a Scottixh backlash. That would be very undeserved. Nobody has done more to isolate the English in Britain and Europe, without a parliament of their own, than Blair, Brown and all the Scottish contingent in powerful positions in Westminster.

I do wish that people like Ben Ord - who ought to know better - would get their facts straight before shooting off letters to HAS. the references ro percentages are actually those that relate to relative wealth not funding.

Will the Scot's still have this formula if they get independence? I note The SNP parliament aren't against this like they are all other things English. And the southern press of England made no mention of this unfairness to the North East.

Southerners get their big fat slice of the cake from other sources. For example the Olympics. £12 billion and more is being pumped into London courtesy of the games in 2012. Go to Kings Cross and see what is being spent on the project there to ensure that people arriving on the Eurostar can get across to east London. Billions more. We are ripped off, abandoned and treated like trash. And we deserve it.
