Joanna Lumley

WITHOUT doubt, Joanna Lumley is a fine actress and she revealed her extraordinary attention-seeking abilities in the recent Gurkhas resettlement affair.

But it has always puzzled me that citizens of some countries love the land of their birth so much they can hardly wait to leave it.

Miss Lumley is apparently an eco-warrior, but as Frances Willows (HAS, July 31) pointed out, she appears to be remarkably silent on the emotive subject of fox-hunting.

With her credentials I would have thought she would have wished to protect old Reynard, but not a squeak, that I am aware of, from her usually well-engaged mouth.

Could it be she doesn’t wish to offend some of her hunting pals?

If so, shame on you, Miss Lumley.

Hugh Pender, Darlington.

What a sad letter from someone who is old enough to know better.

Does Purdy even have hunt pals? Or is this another case of the Left leaning imposing their prejudices on the views of others?
The Gurkhas were treated so shabbily for long because they are part of a tradition that Labour and a large part of their support abohor.
Remember Gordon Brown being shamed into attending the D-Day commemorations? He only went when he was told Obama would be there, Mandleson, told him is my guess.
Has anyone ever noticed Gordon at the docks when the coffins are brought home? I heard his kind words for brave vetran Harry Patch, I have no reason to believe they were sincere.
When Army veterans in Brown's own constituency tried to ask him why he had not attended the funeral of a single Scottish soldier who had died in the line of duty, he barged them aside unceremoniously.
To be fair, I cannot recall the great lady gracing Southampton docks during the Falklands, I have said before, it would be wrong to suggest she was always right.
I do remember she ordered the Treasury to make all means available to “our boys”, she also made sure we replaced all we lost, (casualties are irreplaceable).
Brown has never shown much enthusiasm for the military and has always been reluctant to make provision for the defence of the realm - creating hundreds of thousands of exciting non-jobs in the wasteful public sector, and so potential Labour votes while slashing spending on armed forces; scrapping historic regiments, allowing married quarters to become slums, and condemning wounded servicemen to be treated in civilian hospitals.
Me xenophobic? Sometimes I wish I was one of them!
