Sinking the ship - again

9:52am Friday 10th July 2009

AT the end of the Second World War, Berlin was ablaze with the Nazis burning their records and log books. As we end the term of this Government, rather than a burning frenzy we have a spending frenzy, leaving the incoming government (no doubt, but undeservedly Tory) with a debt-ridden legacy.

Labour authorities and agencies are also hellbent on the waste of public funds. Good examples of this are the grotesque head and shoulders sculpture monstrosity at Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe (cost £165,000), and a series of bus stop and bus back hoardings advertising the profligate free school meals service in County Durham.

Even Cleveland Police Authority, which has already spent hundreds of thousands on its own helicopter, now rewards its Chief Constable with retaining bonuses which would be considered as lottery wins to most people.

Meanwhile, those of us who work, pay taxes, council tax, and National Insurance will see less in the way of public services for increased contributions.

Gordon Brown has openly misled the public about future spending cuts, yet maintains a spend, spend, spend manifesto sending the UK deeper into debt.

This Labour policy of sinking the ship prior to an election is not new; ask Denis Healey. How long can this profligacy last?
