British Empore

HUGH Pender has a point in regards to honours such as Order and Member of the British Empire being outdated in the absence of a British Empire, (HAS, July 2).

However, his point that our empire was “far from what it is in school history books” would depend on what he himself has read and whether he is judging history by the morals of today.

British history has been corrupted by political interference, according to independent think-tank Civitas, and I would not be surprised if the apologists running an education system once the envy of the world dropped British history from the syllabus altogether.

Their agenda seems to be eroding any concept of Britishness and distorting the past to portray Britain as a nation of war-mongering, racist tyrants, whose only contribution to the world was exploitation and slavery.

They systematically denigrate our achievements and ignore the enlightenment, advancement, prosperity, rule of law, democracy and liberty we brought to much of the world.

Britain’s part in bringing an end to the evil slave trade, for example, is an achievement we should celebrate positively rather than being baneful or feeling ashamed of our history and its heroes.

Des More, Darlington

I look forward to the day when the British National Party can help the victims of the world slave trade, why should children work 10 hours a day making our clothes, why should poor Africans work as slaves for rich Mugabe type Africans, why should Thai girls have to live with sexual perverts and sell their bodies in Darlington, why should our 12 year old children be sold to muslims in their 40's and 50's by young crack and smack dealers?
Liberals who think the slave trade stopped hundreds of years ago are very much mistaken in the old days it was about competition you had to be the top person in your village and you earned enough to feed your tribe for a full year.
Lib, Lab, Cons slave trade is 10 times worse because it is about ignoring the plight of the worlds most vulnerable.
The sailors in Nelsons Navy used to get the cat o nine tails for misbehaviour perhaps we could really celebrate a Great British achievement if it was brought back for some of the 'racist' scum mentioned above.

The other day I recieved an e-mail from a trusted source claiming that the government has removed all reference to the Holocaust from the national school syllabus on the grounds that it would offend muslims.I find this incredulous as ALL the muslims I know, and I suspect 99% of muslims living here, would be appauled that a) it was being "removed from the history books" and b) that they were said to be to blame!.
Are any other correspondants to these columns aware of this skullduggery and if it is true, so far I have been unable to ascertain its validity but given how that great dictator gaulieter Brown has reduced this country to a big brother state I suspect it is correct. Also if grumpenfuerer Pender thinks come the next election people aregoing to vote for Labour in their droves he may be very disappointed.

I heard a year or so ago that they were removing references to the Holocaust in case if offended Muslism.

But the history of every nation contains those things which people can be proud and those which they are ashamed of.

When someone finds something which offends the best way to deal with it is to simply to tell them to "GROW UP".

Because if people can't expect respect for their culture and history, or point out the darkerside of nations past, when they won't give it others or accept the darkerside of their own past.

So the only way to deal with it is to accept the bad with the good. Because it was through making and learning from the mistakes that nations grow.

But teachers forget that they are at the bottom of the education pyramid. They only teach the basics, which is often out of date, vastly inaccurate and on the whjole worthless. Which is why when people start college, uni. students are told to forget everything they learned at school.
