Redcar

WE spent a day at Redcar last week. The sky and sea were blue.

The tide was out and we walked on the beach and paddled in the sea. There was a black labrador on the beach doing what dogs do (twice), but minus an owner with a pooper-scooper.

We sat on the promenade, opposite the amusement arcades, where we people-watched, as you do. There was the usual litter strewn around; ice cream cones, chips, papers and underneath a seat opposite, a discarded/used nappy. I hope the mother recognises herself and is suitably ashamed – there was a litter bin nearby.

We bought ices from what is probably the longest-established ice cream vendor in Redcar and a place frequented by my family for almost 50 years. The ice cream has been consistently good until our latest visit. The ice cream had a watery consistency, no longer tasted creamy and the famous ice topping that I believe was originated by the firm has changed. It was paler in colour and no longer had the same distinctive taste.

A walk along the High Street revealed cleaner streets – probably because few people were about as many of the shops were empty and boarded up.

Redcar, the place of my childhood outings, my favourite “seaside” place. Redcar – what happened?

C Constance, Bishop Auckland.
