Headlights

CAN somebody please explain the obsession of some drivers with driving around with headlights on in the middle of the day?

It is unnecessary, inconsiderate, distracting and in some cases actually dangerous.

Recently, I was followed by a car with four front lights on.

There was low sun in front and the driver had his sun visor down and was wearing sun glasses.

With many modern cars that have light clusters it is very often difficult to see indicators past the lights. I have no doubt that I will get replies telling me that it makes for better visibility and therefore increasing safety.

I wonder if that will be the person who came past me on a 30mph stretch of Coniscliffe Road, Darlington, at about 50mph last week? After all, he had his headlights on.

GN Bull, Darlington.

There could be a number of rational explanations
1. It is certainly the case that Swedish built cars have this built in as standard.
2. We have had mixed weather recently ie. Sudden storms. Perhaps someone drove through such a storm and forgot once they were back into clearer weather. Guilty as charged!!
3. A bit off the wall perhaps but there are more Polish drivers here than there used to be and it is the law over there to keep lights running. Surely it is a habit which they would find understandably hard (or indeed reluctant) to break

I believe the EU are wanting if it has not already been approved for all new cars in the near future to have the head lights to come on when the engine is switched on. This is a good idea for black and dark grey cars etc for in poor light they are practically invisible or blend into the same colour road surfaces. This is born out by the fact that insurance companies etc say dark cars are involved in more accidents. And motorcyclists often have their headlights on so other road users can see them.

This seems another "One size fits all" measure from EU. While these might be a good idea in dark Baltic days, the drivers in Southern Spain, Italy etc have to have theirs on in bright sunshine. These will do the sensible thing. Ignore the new regulations and get away with it.
