Hen harriers

ONCE again you report (Echo, Dec 22) that hen harriers are undergoing “illegal and systematic persecution” and “disruption”

on grouse moors.

Your story was based on a report from Natural England, the Government’s conservation body, not the supposedly biased RSPB.

Is it not time this persecution was stopped? Should not the moor owners suffer substantial fines, rather than the gamekeepers who must obey the edicts of the owner to maximise grouse numbers, or risk losing their jobs?

Eric Gendle, Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough.

Eric

Thanks for this letter. The slaughter of wildlife by so-called sportsmen is a national disgrace. When they've wiped out the last Hen Harrier they will turn to other endangered species. Sadly we will have to add this crime to the list (as long as your arm) of offenses that the police choose not to investigate due to "lack of resources". If only we could elect our Chief Constable and decide HIS priorities for him!

There is nothing i can add to this, other than, i agree with every word David Lacey wrote and Edmondsley for that matter.
I would dearly love to participate in a "sport" where these sportsmen are the quarry.
