FURTHER to the complaints about transport companies not allowing electric scooters and buggies onto trains and buses (Echo, Apr 28 and HAS, May 3), anybody with a bit of cash can buy a scooter and say “I’m disabled”.
That’s why buses and trains won’t let them on.
If you are truly disabled and have a genuine problem walking, talk to your GP. You can get free electric wheelchairs from the NHS if you disability warrants it.
Wheelchairs are allowed on public transport, that’s the law, but scooters are not covered by the law because anyone can buy them.
I have a manual wheelchair from the NHS and am being assessed for an electrical one on the recommendation of a pain specialist after I was referred by my GP. The process does take a while, but if you are in genuine need, don’t waste your money, see your GP!
