CHRIS LLOYD (Echo, April 19) and some of your letter writers claim the imminent election is about ensuring Theresa May can achieve a “hard” rather than “soft” Brexit.

But this is just a matter of degree and both approaches offer more of the same - namely, neoliberal capitalism.

This election should be about much more.

Neoliberalism is a dysfunctional and collapsing economic system.

It is driven by a deluded belief in markets as the answer to everything and an unsustainable dependency on continuous growth and job creation but as historian Yuval Harari notes there is no law of nature saying this is inevitable.

Indeed, we are witnessing the mass eradication of secure jobs and full-time employment as the pervading impact of technological change is felt globally.

The Institute for Public Policy Research claims by 2030 labour market insecurity will be widespread for most.

Neoliberalism is also significantly contributing to a toxic environmental mix of global warming, pollution, resource depletion and species extinction.

At least Jeremy Corbyn seems to recognize the implications for ordinary people of continuing with this failing economic model and hopefully will be given a fair hearing over the next few months - but I doubt it!
