MANY Northern Echo readers would be shocked to read the Echo’s front page headlines (April 11) “Top pay for more council bosses”, not least those who work providing front line council and public services, who have seen their pay stagnate with little or no increase in their wages for many years.
People wanting to work in the public sector did it more on a vocational-type basis than what appears to be a mercenary one for those in the top jobs.
What appears to happen at the top end of the public sector, especially with council chiefs, is that they can inflate their salaries while those on the front line take a pay hit.
One thing is apparent, when it comes to pay restraint, we are not all in it together.
