I WAS able to vote in the 1975 referendum which asked if Britain should remain in the (then) European Economic Community, and I voted ‘yes’.

We were assured by our political leaders that this was just a club for free trade, and involved no loss of sovereignty.

These people lied to us, they were aware even then that the ultimate destination was a United States of Europe, and various treaties have ensured that we have moved towards that end at an ever-increasing pace. This is not what I voted for in 1975.

We were never asked to vote on any new treaty, and to me it seemed that there was no chance of escape.

The 2016 referendum was a chance of a lifetime to express how most ordinary citizens felt about this, and they turned out in droves to do so. This choice clearly does not suit the political elite, who are doing everything possible to frustrate the will of the people.

Indeed, one noble Lord stated that the people could not be allowed to decide. Perish the thought!

The SNP are now bleating about another independence referendum, just two years after losing the last one.

If Scotland leaves the Union in order to remain in the EU it will be obliged to cede more control to Brussels. I cannot imagine what sort of independence that would be.

At least the rest of the UK would be free from the dominance of the EU and Scottish blackmail tactics.
