REGARDING the letter from VJ Connor about the singing of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” by rugby fans at Twickenham (HAS, March 15).

Old VJ makes a too serious remark about something that is supposed to be jocular.

This song is sung with each word accompanied by an appropriate gesture. This means that when the away team travelling home, joyous with beer, when told to shut up by the coach driver who had had too much of an earful, could perform the actions without words and so “sing” in silence.

How I should love to wear my old boots again.
