AT the SNP conference, Nicola Sturgeon invites the English to move to Scotland.

Were Scotland, with its 10 per cent deficit – the highest in Europe – to become independent and try to join the EU, English workers would be especially welcome.

Ms Sturgeon could then inflict upon them the massive tax rises and swingeing cuts to public services that Scots would already be enduring.

This will be necessary to reduce Scotland’s deficit to three per cent, as mandated by EU entry rules.

Excellent wheeze, Nicola.

AT the time of the referendum in Scotland in 2014 some English people were very hostile to the idea.

I think the reason was because Scotland had already benefited from the Barnet funding formula at the expense of the North-East.

Now I’m sure some in England will want to stop another referendum and hope the nationalist party in Scotland is silenced. There appears to be a battle of wits going on between Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon.

Gordon Brown has made a constructive suggestion on the future, appealing to the internationalism of Scottish people who vote to remain in EU by calling for greater autonomy to all devolved assemblies including Wales and Northern Ireland and greater autonomy to English regions.

I think Mr Brown’s idea should be given consideration in all parts of the UK.

It counters greater divisiveness, and I think could reflect opinion in all parts of the UK.
