THIS week I watched a TV programme called the Railways that Built Britain presented by Chris Tarrant.

It was stressed in this programme that the first "real" railway in Britain was the Manchester to Liverpool line which opened in 1830.

Of the North-East's local line, the Stockton to Darlington railway, there wasn’t so much as a mention.

Incredibly, it appears it has been airbrushed from history.

Just another example of a TV programme rewriting history.
