I WRITE this letter with sadness about the closing of Darlington’s beautiful library.

It’s such a lovely building and it belongs to the people of Darlington, given as a gift from the Pease family.

I’m a pensioner, and when I go to the library with my grandchildren, and spend a couple of hours there, the children love it.

If it moved to the Dolphin Centre, I for one wouldn’t go, as I don’t use the Dolphin Centre – too noisy, and I don’t like the chlorine smell of the bath water.

I think it’s a disgrace that Darlington Borough Council can do this – it’s just not right. There will be lots of senior people feeling as I do, but don’t know how to express themselves because they are not very good at putting pen to paper.

Whatever room they put the library in we still have to walk through the same way. The Dolphin Centre is not safe for the elderly as they could get knocked or pushed accidentally. In fact, it’s not good all-round.

I feel safe in our library, it’s nice and quiet and safe for the children. It’s part of our town and it would be heart-breaking to close such a lovely building. Why are councillors trying to spoil our town, the library is Darlington full stop. Darlington Borough Council has no right to close it – it’s not theirs.

To me it is stealing off the people.

I say leave alone what you don’t own. I will back the library all the way, so will a lot more people.
