WHAT a joy to read the Reverend Peter Mullen’s homily to George Orwell (Echo, Aug 22). I particularly enjoyed his colourful accusations about a liberal national newspaper when defining the meaning of ‘doublethink’ the phrase Orwell used in his seminal book 1984.
As a regular reader of Mr Mullen’s column I am often struck by the doublethink of this man of the cloth, his right wing views he espouses each week and the Christian views upheld in the scriptures of tolerance and an unyielding critique of injustice.
The former Bishop of Durham wrote a book, The Contradiction of Christianity. A scholarly book, which exemplifies the juxtaposition I often see on Monday morning in the Reverend’s column.
