MANY thanks to Colin Moran (HAS, May 3) for his sober and detailed explanation of the case involving the “Metric Martyrs”.

His facts as stated are entirely correct.

Moran makes it abundantly clear that it was British, and not EU, officials who were responsible for these entirely unnecessary prosecutions.

Just one more case of UK public servants “gold plating” EU rules as agreed by our UK Government, adding on their own extra regulations and blaming the EU for it.

However, the Metric Martyrs were wrong in claiming the EU had banned selling bananas by the pound, which was legal then and still is.
