MIKE AMOS, sadly, was correct about the present day plight of Shildon (Echo, Nov 11), although I also agree with the writer who described Shildon people as kind and friendly.
When I moved to Shildon in 1967 it was a bustling community with a large employer in Shildon wagon works.
Indeed, on a Saturday you could hardly walk down Church Street (then the main shopping area) without stepping onto the road to get past other shoppers.
Unfortunately, it’s not only Shildon that has since gone into a serious spiral of decline.
Bishop Auckand has also suffered greatly, as have most North-East high streets/ Out of town shopping seems to what we are now offered.
So, what happens to our high streets? Well, Shildon happens.
A Barrass, Shildon
