ONCE again Jeremy Corbyn has announced that a future Labour government would renationalise the railways.

In his letter (HAS, Sept 28), Jim Harper rightly points out that in Germany and France the railways are (mostly) state run. But both have missed the point.

In Brussels the European Commission is busy pushing through the fourth railway package aimed at bringing competition to public service obligation (PSO) passenger contracts across the EU.

The model they have chosen is identical to that already in force in the UK. While the Governments in Berlin and Paris are fiercely resisting the move it is inevitable that its passage will be completed.

So should the UK try to enact a Bill in Parliament to renationalise our railways, it would be immediately vetoed by the EU.

In conclusion I find it remarkable that UK supporters of the EU should wish to oppose a policy that opens up foreign railways to competition from British firms.
