WITH reference to the “pre-match walk” letter by H McLaren (HAS, Sept 22) and what he refers to as the “good old days” of the Newcastle United team.
As I remember, Newcastle FC were at their zenith during the 1950s, vanquishing their opponents left, right and centre.
The 1st Battalion of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, who were serving on the front line in Korea, carried the memory of the club’s achievements with them by naming the peaks on the Chinese-held ridge, in front and above their positions “Newcastle” “United” “Football” and “Club”. The local name of that Chinese held high ground is Maryangsan.
When the RNF battalion’s time in Korea expired, and the battalion I served with took over their former positions, the name “United” remained for our battalion’s reference and the other peaks were number designated, 217, 317, except two, that were known as “Hinge” and “Knoll.”
