The Northern Echo’s very fair and balanced editorial on Jeremy Corbyn (30 Sept) posed the question of his credibility based upon the key issues of economy and national security. Sooner or later the honeymoon would be over it stated. I think we might be there already.
Corbyn is, in many respects, a breath of fresh air. His approach is straightforward and I have a lot of time for his inclusive adult approach. He is a decent man, but not a leader. His comments in interview on national security today were frankly worrying.
He wants a nuclear-free world which is laudable if unrealistic. As Prime Minister he would under no circumstances use the nuclear option.
This, though honest, was a profoundly dangerous comment which no leader can, and should, admit too. It completely undermines his position, his party’s future position and more importantly our national security should he become Prime Minister.
Immediately his shadow cabinet colleagues distanced themselves from his words and one even said it was something a Prime Minister could not say.
I fear the road is going to be a very rocky one.
