REGARDING Alex Salmon’s prediction that a “second Scottish independence vote is now inevitable” (Ech, July 27).

As a one-time hard-line British Unionist I hope he is correct.

However, I think there is now a more compelling argument to have an all inclusive four nations vote on the dissolution of the UK.

Alex is correct that Scotland is not getting the promises of the vow made in the dying days of the referendum by the pathetic, panicking, pro-Union group.

However, if Scotland did get these promises contained within the vow then I am sure there would have been a significant English backlash.

This being the case I now feel that the UK has run its course and should be put to bed.

The four nations are now all pulling in different directions, Scotland has ditched the declining Labour Party for the republican SNP, while England voted massively for the parties of the right such as the Tories and Ukip, and Leanne Wood, by far the poorest performer of all the party leaders, embarrassingly only “wanted to talk about Wales” !.

I therefore believe that a referendum on the dissolution of the UK is certainly the way forward as it would solve two possible pending referenda.

Firstly, it would allow the countries of the UK to stay together or commence the parting of the ways, thereby satisfying the bigoted sectarian arguments of the SNP and allow English freedom for those who are heartily sick of the bleating anti-English rhetoric of the celtic nations.

Secondly it would withdraw the three nations of Great Britain out of the European Union as currently only the UK’s Northern Ireland is a named member.

England and the others would have to re-apply for membership of the EU, if they wished to do so.

An independent England enjoying the wealth generated by the City of London evenly distributed to its new elected city Mayors is the way forward and the North East would benefit massively as the defunct Barnett Formula would no longer oppress the north of England.
