I ENTIRELY agree with PA Aspinall (HAS, July 18) describing the Angel of the North as “one man’s tribute to his own ego”.

Were it not for its inspired name, this monstrosity would be dismissed as a costly indulgence, uninspiring and downright ugly. It is has not an iota of the beauty and spiritual uplift of “Christ the Redeemer” overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Our mucky Angel was designed to rust, presumably as an epitaph to the demise of the shipbuilding industry in which the North-East once led the world.
