SUNDAY was the year’s longest day, when druids, pagans and revellers met at Stonehenge to celebrate the Summer Solstice.

This year there were estimated to be 36,000 people at the stone circles and they left a mountain of litter at a revered place.

I would have thought that the type of person celebrating the solstice would have a little more thought for the environment and especially at an iconic site like Stonehenge.

Why is it that we can transport things like food and drink to these functions but when the containers are empty they are left behind?

I noted that a smoker in Durham Market Place who discarded his cigarette end and refused to pay the £60 fixed penalty amount was taken to court (Echo, June 18).

The final fine was £600.

Litter is a major problem and has to be severely clamped down on. If you take litter somewhere, make sure you bring it back.
